If you smell gas right now

Leave the building first. Then call your utility from outside.

Do not call Future Now Energy. We supply the gas — your utility owns the pipes, the meter and the emergency crews, and they are the only ones who can make a leak safe.

If anyone is hurt, or there is a fire, call 911 first — from a neighbour’s house or somewhere well away from the smell.

What to do

The order matters

  1. Get out

Leave immediately and take everyone with you. Move well away from the building. Don’t stop to open windows, gather belongings, or look for the leak.

  2. Don’t make a spark

On your way out, don’t touch light switches, thermostats, garage door openers, landlines or appliances. Don’t use your mobile phone or a torch until you are outside and away. Don’t start a vehicle parked nearby. Natural gas ignites from a spark as easily as from a flame.

  3. Call from a safe distance

Once you are well away, call your utility on the number above. They run 24-hour emergency crews. If there is fire or injury, call 911 first.

  4. Stay out until they say otherwise

Don’t go back inside for any reason until the utility’s crew tells you it is safe. Don’t try to shut off a valve, ventilate the space, or find the source yourself.

Knowing the signs

Gas leaks announce themselves in three ways

Smell

Natural gas has no smell of its own. Your utility adds an odourant so it smells of rotten eggs or sulphur. Act on even a faint trace — you are not being dramatic.

Sound

A hissing, roaring or whistling noise near a gas line, meter or appliance.

Sight

Bubbling in standing water, blowing dirt, a patch of dead or dying vegetation in an otherwise green area, or exposed pipe and sinkholes near a gas line.

Before you dig

Call 811 first — it’s free, and it’s the law

Fence posts, decks, trees, footings, garden beds — buried gas lines are shallower than most people expect. Contact 811 (Sask 1st Call in Saskatchewan, JULIE in Illinois, OUPS in Ohio) a few working days before you break ground and the utility will mark their lines at no charge.

Hitting a gas line is the most common cause of serious residential gas incidents, and it is almost entirely preventable with one phone call.

Being straight with you

We do not

  • Own, operate, inspect or repair any pipeline, service line or meter.
